Title Automatic Subgenre Classification of Heavy Metal Music Type Book Whole
  Year 2011 Publication Abbreviated Journal
  Volume Issue Pages 65
Keywords Automatic genre classification; classifications; genre; heavy metal; heavy rock; music; subgenre
Abstract Automatic genre classification of music has been of interest for researchers over a decade. Many success-ful methods and machine learning algorithms have been developed achieving reasonably good results. This thesis explores automatic sub-genre classification problem of one of the most popular meta-genres, heavy metal. To the best of my knowledge this is the first attempt to study the issue. Besides attempting automatic classification, the thesis investigates sub-genre taxonomy of heavy metal music, highlighting the historical origins and the most prominent musical features of its sub-genres.

For classification, an algorithm proposed in (Barbedo & Lopes, 2007) was modified and implemented in MATLAB. The obtained results were compared to other commonly used classifiers such as AdaBoost and K-nearest neighbours. For each classifier two sets of features were employed selected using two strategies: Correlation based feature selection and Wrapper selection. A dataset consisting of 210 tracks representing seven genres was used for testing the classification algorithms. Implemented algorithm classified 37.1% of test samples correctly, which is significantly better performance than random classification (14.3%). However, it was not the best achieved result among the classifiers tested. The best result with correct classification rate of 45.7% was achieved by AdaBoost algorithm.

Title Esoteric Symbolism in Doom Metal Type Book Whole
  Year 2016 Publication Abbreviated Journal
  Volume Issue Pages
Keywords Rhetoric; Motifs; Doom metal; Esoterism
Abstract “By contrast, this study will focus on the way in which (some, but not all) doom metal artistsincorporate three cultural ideas into their works; horror, the occult, and the psychedelic. Whilstmuch of metal focuses on horror and monsters, particularly death metal, doom metal's use of moreesoteric material separates it from much of the larger metal genre, and connects it to an eclecticrange of cultural and musical influences. Doom metal's use of such paradigms has not beenexamined thus far, but there is much to be learned from such study; these cultural trends areintegral to understanding the history of esotericism and countercultural practice. In this study I willdefine each of those three cultural ideas, as well as further considering the cultural discourses thatcompose doom metal, and defining which styles within the genre are of the most interest. I will thenanalyse a range of music, album art and interviews with musicians, aiming to pinpoint how, and forwhat purpose, each band incorporates those elements into their style. Further, I will investigate howthese musicians and their works form part of larger zeitgeists (particularly that of esotericism), andwill consider how these artists, in different times and places, have come to utilise similar symbolsand ideas. These commonalities between musicians, I will argue, shows doom metal to be a 'glocal'musical phenomenon that has the ability to utilise a wide variety of cultural ideas and artifacts invariegated situations.” (from 4th page of introduction)

Title CULTURA JUVENIL E IDENTIDAD: ORIGEN Y DESARROLLO DE LA CULTURA DEL METAL EN LA CIUDAD DE LIMA ENTRE LOS AÑOS 1980 Y 2017 Type Book Whole
  Year 2017 Publication Abbreviated Journal
  Volume Issue Pages 316
Keywords Youth culture; identity; subculture; cultural construction; metal music
Abstract This research deals with the origin and development of the culture of Metal music in the city of Lima, and how adolescents of that time began the construction of a musical scene and the construction of an identity as individuals and as a community. The initial development of this urban culture took place during the 1980s, a period that was disastrous for Peru, where there was a chaotic context at the political, social level; economic; terror, suffering and above all uncertainty about the future. Between the bombs, death and destruction – facts generated by armed movements – the culture of Metal began to take shape, having as protagonists this group of adolescents; largely as rebellion and rejection about what they had to live. It was a society they did not want to be in. Based on different cultural manifestations (bands, fanzines, concerts, organizations) they began to build their own world, culture and identity. This identity is revaluated and becomes more powerful today when compared with the new generations of metalheads; who, based on the use of technology and a generally more favorable context, also try to participate in this urban culture.

  Year 2009 Publication Abbreviated Journal
  Volume Issue Pages 150
  Keywords Música Rock-Metal

Type Journal Article

Keywords Ultra metal, Contracultura, Década de los 80s, Violencia, Juventud, Medellín; Ultra metal, Counterculture, 1980s, Violence, Youth, Medellín.

[ This investigative and qualitative paper seeks to focus on the positions that have derived from communication, with contributions from sociology and social sciences, through a theoretical and historical journey of the most important events of the spectrum of time, as well as of its main contributions and limitations of the artistic and musical expressions associated with the “Ultra Metal” movement and its importance in the transformations of society as a result of the dynamics of violence associated with drug traffickers' disputes. These disciplines have provided different concepts to the phenomenon of the search for identities and peers, with connotations such as subculture, counterculture, urban tribes and youth cultures, which have emerged with very different and diverse visions. This study aims to analyze the impact on society of the “Ultra Metal” protest movement as an alternative to the violence experienced by young people in the city of Medellin during the 1980s. This is based on four factors: the conditions of the historical context in the creation of the protesting countercultural movement “Ultra Metal”; the imaginaries that are configured through music and rebellious youth groups that allow the conception of it as a counterculture; the dynamic social contexts expressed through music, individuality, urban tribes in response scenarios against violence generated over time and the concepts of the phenomenon of searching for identities and peers, with connotations such as subculture, counterculture, urban tribes and youth cultures.]
