Title To the sources! On historical source criticism in metal studies Type Journal Article
Year 2023 Publication Popular Music History Abbreviated Journal
  Volume 15 Issue 1 Pages 54–77
Keywords Metal Studies, History, Source Criticism, sonic knowledge, Styria, historical sources, metal scenes
Abstract Metal studies is usually considered to be a fundamentally interdisciplinary field of research. However, the disciplines that were included at its beginning (mostly sociology, cultural anthropology, musicology, and philosophy) are still theoretically dominant. As a consequence, several important research questions that do not reflect these disciplines’ epistemologies have remained unanswered to this day. To a great extent, this applies to historical research questions on metal scenes. In this respect, the author argues that metal studies could benefit from the expertise of history in general and source criticism in particular. In order to develop this argument, necessary basic traits of contemporary historical source criticism are introduced. Then, the author proceeds by individually discussing three fundamental types of sources that are structurally tied to the historical long-term processes in metal scenes: concert flyers, album covers and band T-shirts. Research into the Styrian metal scene in south-eastern Austria provides examples. To conclude, it is posited that starting from a semiotic concept of source criticism and then adapting such a concept for the specific purposes of metal studies is necessary to nurture historical awareness and the accuracy of relevant research.

Title On Extremity: From Music to Images, Words, and Experiences Type Book Whole
  Year 2023 Publication Abbreviated Journal
  Volume Issue Pages 290
  Keywords
Abstract “On Extremity: From Music to Images, Words, and Experiences brings together transdisciplinary scholarship on sounds, images, words, and experiences (human and non-human) to reflect on the polysemic and polymorphic characteristics of extremity and the category of the extreme. The editors and authors aim to contribute to a living, breathing, and expanding definition of extremity that helps us understand what we gain, or lose, when we interact with it, create it, and share it with, or force it upon, others. The volume calls for the emergence of “extremity studies” as an area of perusal to help us navigate our current global condition.”

Title Heavy Music Mothers: Extreme Identities, Narrative Disruptions Type Book Whole
  Year 2023 Publication Abbreviated Journal
  Volume Issue Pages 152
  Keywords
Abstract “Heavy Music Mothers: Extreme Identities, Narrative Disruptions is an exploration of women and heavy music and the ways in which women have historically engaged with musicking as mothers. Julie Turley and Joan Jocson-Singh, musicking mothers themselves, largely employ an ethnographic lens, foregrounded in powerful one-on-one original interviews as vignettes that narrate thematic patterns. Other chapters examine motherhood identity embedded in respective published rock music memoirs, discussions of rock performance as a site of maternal bonding, and themes that arise when heavy music mothers write about motherhood. Autoethnographic portions throughout give the book an intimate and personal tone: one such chapter presents the concept of vigilante motherhood within an auto-ethnographic context.

The authors reference the book’s limitations, meditating on historically marginalized moms the authors predict and hope the focus will be on for the future. Heavy Music Mothers is a robust study of women and motherhood set within a music culture historically inhospitable to both women and mothers. This book, the first scholarly study of this topic, is just the beginning.”

Title When Monsters Roar and Angels Sing: Eine kleine Soziologie des Heavy Metal Type Book Whole
  Year 2023 Publication Abbreviated Journal
  Volume Issue Pages 187

[Once the music of young socialites and outlaws, heavy metal has now become more and more mainstream in society: more than 10 million Germans listen to heavy metal. But why do they do this? What are they looking for and what do they find in this music, which outsiders often perceive as pure noise? Why is heavy metal so full of monsters and devils – and why don't the gods and angels stay silent either? What do metal fans experience when they listen to their music – and what experience drives them to go to concert again and again? Why do they keep reading music magazines and don't stop buying CDs? How can we explain the fact that 40 percent of metal fans claim that music saved their lives? And why is heavy metal stronger than the music industry? What is heavy metal really about? Hartmut Rosa answers these questions and more in this little sociology of heavy metal.]

//

<< Der Soziologe Hartmut Rosa überträgt in „When Monsters Roar and Angels Sing. Eine kleine Soziologie des Heavy Metal“ seine vieldiskutierte Resonanztheorie ganz konkret auf das praktische Beispiel Heavy Metal. Was suchen und was finden Menschen in dieser Musik? Und was kann die Gesellschaft von der Kulturströmung Heavy Metal lernen? “Heavy Metal ist für mich ein troziges 'Trotzdem!'”, so Hartmut Rosa. Wir haben mit dem bekennenden Metalfan zu seinem neuen Buch gesprochen.“ >>

[In “When Monsters Roar and Angels Sing. A Short Sociology of Heavy Metal,” the sociologist Hartmut Rosa specifically transfers his much-discussed resonance theory to the practical example of heavy metal. What are people looking for and what do they find in this music? And what can society learn from the heavy metal cultural movement? ”For me, heavy metal is a defiant 'Nevertheless!'" says Hartmut Rosa. We spoke to the self-confessed metal fan about his new book.]
