Tampa, Florida's Obituary has been a death metal institution since 1984. Guided by the inhuman, if not unfathomably deranged vocals of John Tardy, the obscenely brutal guitar tone of Trevor Peres and rhythmic brilliance of drummer Donald Tardy, Obituary defined heaviness throughout the 1990s. Their 1989 'Slowly We Rot' and 1990 'Cause of Death' studio albums are undisputed classics, but their live prowess and unwavering dedication to their fans made them one of the metal underground's most respected bands.An unexpected five-year hiatus starting in 1998 only saw Obituary's stature grow when a new generation of bands adopted their sonic trademarks. Founded in 1989, metal band Sentenced was a pioneer of Finnish heavy music. The band’s melancholy tunes had a universal appeal that spoke to audiences far further afield than just in their native North, with more than a million records sold worldwide. “Sekä puhumiseen että riemuitsemiseen pätee sama perussääntö: näitä tehdään vain kun on oikea tarve. Valittamiseen ja murehtimiseen riittää toki vähempikin.”Vuonna 1989 perustettu Sentenced oli suomalaisen raskaan rockin uranuurtaja. Melankoliasta voimaa puristanut yhtye vetosi muuallakin kuin Pohjolassa, ja sen levymyynti hipoo maailmanlaajuisesti miljoonaa. Kuusitoistavuotisen uransa aikana Sentenced teki lukuisia kiertueita Euroopassa ja Pohjois-Amerikassa. Vankka suosio Keski-Euroopassa teki yhtyeelle tutuksi muun muassa Berliinin ja Dortmundin klubit sekä festivaalit Saksan Rock Hardista Hollannin legendaariseen Dynamo Open Airiin. Euroopan laitoja yhtye kolusi aina Lontoon Astoria-klubilta Roomaan ja Osloon, joista jälkimmäisiä bändi muistaa kiertueuran pahoina paikkoina. Euroopan lisäksi lähinnä Yhdysvalloissa kiertänyt yhtye nousi viimeisellä ulkomaankiertueellaan vuonna 2005 lauteille myös Moskovassa ja Mexico Cityssä, missä mukana laulava yleisömassa sai keikkapaikan seinät tutisemaan ja lopettamispäätöksen tehneen bändin jäsenten silmäkulmat kostumaan.Pohjoispohjalaisten teinipoikien uhosta alkanut tarina on täynnä poskettomia käänteitä ja syvää tragiikkaa. Biisien synnyn salat, ikimuistoiset keikat ja kiertue-elämän alhot. Kuolemanvakavat kohtalot ja pohjoispohjalainen hirtehishuumori, saavutukset ja menetetyt mahdollisuudet. Abstract |
La presente tesis tiene como objetivo analizar las razones que llevaron a un grupo de jóvenes limeños varones, en la década de los ochenta, a tocar metal, tanto en la variante de heavy metal tradicional como en la extrema, a la vez que busca explicar de qué manera las circunstancias de la realidad nacional, tanto económicas como sociales y políticas, influyeron en la constitución de dicho género musical como escena. Para ello, parto de dos hipótesis. Por un lado, en un contexto de globalización y desestructuración, estos jóvenes encuentran, en la oscuridad, pesadez y potencia del metal, un espacio en el que construir lazos sociales entre pares y afianzar estructuras paralelas de autonomía y poder. Por otro lado, la formación de la escena metalera se da primero en una etapa (1983-1985) de convivencia entre las bandas de metal y las de otros subgéneros del rock; y luego, en una segunda etapa (1986-1989), esta adquiere carácter independiente y se perfila en dos vertientes: una que busca la profesionalización, que eventualmente pierde terreno ante la crisis económica, y otra underground, que lograr sortear la crisis a partir de sus propios códigos, los cuales marcan el futuro de la escena.
Con el fin de poner a prueba dichas hipótesis, realicé entrevistas a participantes de la escena de la época, consulté diversos periódicos, revistas y fanzines, además de fuentes secundarias. Además de confirmar las hipótesis de investigación, esta tesis muestra, primero, que los códigos musicales (en este caso del metal) influyeron en la realidad de los jóvenes que adoptaron dicho género como seña identitaria; y, segundo, que las particularidades de la escena metalera limeña respondieron a eventos y tendencias sociales, políticas y económicas propias de la realidad peruana. |

Abstract |
This research deals with the origin and development of the culture of Metal music in the city of Lima, and how adolescents of that time began the construction of a musical scene and the construction of an identity as individuals and as a community. The initial development of this urban culture took place during the 1980s, a period that was disastrous for Peru, where there was a chaotic context at the political, social level; economic; terror, suffering and above all uncertainty about the future. Between the bombs, death and destruction – facts generated by armed movements – the culture of Metal began to take shape, having as protagonists this group of adolescents; largely as rebellion and rejection about what they had to live. It was a society they did not want to be in. Based on different cultural manifestations (bands, fanzines, concerts, organizations) they began to build their own world, culture and identity. This identity is revaluated and becomes more powerful today when compared with the new generations of metalheads; who, based on the use of technology and a generally more favorable context, also try to participate in this urban culture. |

En el Perú y los países de América Latina, se suceden los testimonios de búsqueda de una sociedad más inclusiva y democrática, sin embargo persisten problemas estructurales como el creciente deterioro económico, la corrupción en las esferas de poder, el descrédito de las instituciones políticas, el debilitamiento de los mecanismos de integración tradicional (la comunidad), generando una problemática compleja en el cual parecen ganar terreno la conformidad y la desesperanza. En este contexto, surgen formas organizativas y de expresión juveniles; una de estas es el espacio donde se congregan los jóvenes alrededor de la música rock metal, operando como punto de referencia, expresión y construcción de identidades. Sin embargo, no existe mucha información acerca de esta música y mucho menos tesis que hablen acerca de los jóvenes que lo practican. ' Por esta razón, el presente estudio está destinado a conocer como se convocan, organizan y construyen su identidad los jóvenes que se reúnen en torno a la música rock metal en la Ciudad de Huancayo. Para efecto de esta tesis, se recoge la información desde la observación participante y entrevistas a jóvenes varones y mujeres cultores de la música rock metal, así también a organizadores de conciertos y propietarios de discotiendas de música, salas de ensayo y centros donde realizan tatuajes. |

Abstract |
El presente trabajo se enfrenta a las estrategias utilizadas por las bandas de metal en el Perú, específicamente aquellas corrientes denominadas como “metal extremo”, para la construcción de discursos de autenticidad. Estas estrategias se expresan a través de técnicas de proceso sonoro y decisiones en relación a la producción musical tomadas durante el registro en el estudio de grabación y posterior edición en fonogramas. Estas decisiones, son también determinadas con anterioridad a la producción, y representan tanto la forma en la que las bandas conceptualizan su sonoridad en la práctica musical privada y grupal, como su expresión en la interpretación en el espacio escénico. Para lograr identificar estas estrategias, se aplican técnicas etnográficas y de la musicología de la producción musical, aunadas al análisis de conceptos relacionados con la autenticidad dentro del metal, especialmente la percepción de transgresión, con el fin de definir las características centrales que identifican el sonido del metal extremo peruano. Para ello realizo un estudio de caso que identifica y analiza la producción musical en la discografía de la banda limeña Hadez entre los años 1988 y 2000.
Esta producción se compone por 4 “demos” y 2 álbumes, en los que vemos reflejados los cambios en los discursos sonoros de autenticidad de la banda a través del tiempo. Esta investigación pretende demostrar el valor fundamental de la toma de decisiones en la producción musical del metal extremo peruano, ya que es a través de estas decisiones que se construyen y negocian los discursos de autenticidad. Estas estrategias y decisiones prácticas, influenciadas por el uso y acceso a la tecnología en el entorno de grabación e informadas por los discursos de autogestión, comunes una “escena global” underground del metal extremo, se encuentran en constante proceso de negociación con características propias locales, que exploro a través de este trabajo, y que definiremos como “chakalidad”. |
