  Abstract <<

[Product description: In heavy metal, the myth has always been maintained that the entire scene operates outside of all social and cultural norms. This ideal is paradigmatically expressed in the classic “Breaking the Law” by Judas Priest. Although this idea established itself as an important part of the metal scene's foundation of identity, to date there is no research that asks about the connection between legal reference, scene ethos and sound in heavy metal.

In this pioneering study, cultural historian Peter Pichler examines how the local metal scene in Graz and Styria has been shaped by these aspects over the last 40 years. The author succeeds in proving that the emergence of the individual “sound” of Styrian metal can be explained by the cultural interplay of law, morals and sound.]

Title (up) Build an Active Foundation for Heavy Metal Subculture Community Success in Contemporary Society Type Book Whole
  Year 2019 Publication Abbreviated Journal
  Volume Issue Pages 179
Keywords Service design; Subculture; Music; Heavy metal; Marketing; Business strategy
Abstract Since the first album that Black Sabbath released in 1970, the 50-year-long history of heavy metal music makes it has developed into a diversified but controversial subculture all over the world. Even though several big names, such as Metallica, Iron Maiden or Judas Priest, have gained commercial success and mainstream exposure, most of the heavy metal bands, fans and communities are still far from a stable status. The market scale is threatened by poor social acceptance and incorrect stereotypes and is too limited to develop an operational model for heavy metal music communities as mature as mainstream music production in this current state. The goal of this thesis is to: 1) explore the core value of heavy metal subculture and design an organizational strategy to strengthen the connection between various roles within the community. The research was divided into three parts. The first part is the quantitative research on the development of heavy metal music in different regions, shows the regional trends of heavy metal subculture. The second part is the qualitative evaluation of heavy metal albums’ covers and lyrics, and documentary films about heavy metal music. The third part is the interviews with record shop owners. The first part Borrowing the CIS (Corporation Identity System) from the business field, the data collected during the second stage could be categorized into visual identities, communication identities, and behavior identities. The data collected from interviews are organized into a system map to show the current organizational strategy. The conclusion, this thesis proposes a new type of organizational strategy that supports the local heavy metal subculture community, in order to help stabilize the market and strengthen connections of community members through participation in it. Furthermore, inspired by the proposed strategy, more universal strategies and guidelines for other types of subculture are discussed.

Title (up) Burakku Metaru: Japanese Black Metal Music and the 'Glocalization' of a Transgressive Sub-culture Type Book Whole
  Year 2018 Publication Abbreviated Journal
  Volume Issue Pages 110
Keywords Asian Studies; Black metal; Community; Cultural anthropology; Globalization; Heavy metal; Japan; Localization; Social transgression
Abstract This thesis will demonstrate how Black Metal music became established in Japan, how it evolved, and how musicians situate themselves in a globalized form of community. It is a study of how Japanese Black Metal functions in the tensions between globalization and localization, a term called “glocalization” (Victor Roudometof 10). Japanese Black Metal is globalized around a set of rules and ideas, a term Deena Weinstein uses to describe Heavy Metal music called “codes” (Heavy Metal the Music 100). Additionally, as this music is localized, it reveals how many Japanese musicians express uniquely cynical viewpoints of religion and established authority using these globalized codes. Due to its anti-Christian and brutal history in other countries, Black Metal is seen as transgressive against mainstream society. Through electronic ethnographic research with Japanese Black Metal artists, this thesis finally examines how Black Metal is at once desirable yet also transgressive in Japanese society, a country with a comparatively low population of Christians.

  Year 2009 Publication Abbreviated Journal
  Volume Issue Pages 150
