Decolonial Metal in Latin America (with Metal Hammer)

Book presentation and panel

In late 2021, prof. dr. Nelson Varas-Díaz (Florida International University) published Decolonial Metal in Latin America, the book that bundles his years of research on the manifold ways in which metal music in Latin America has manifested to fight against different kinds of oppression passed down from colonialism.

In this video, Eleanor Goodman and Rich Hobson of Metal Hammer meet with Nelson to discuss his book, its contents and impact. Joining them are Didier Goossens and Ross Hagen of the ISMMS and Alejandro Jarrín of Flor de Loto, a Peruvian decolonial metal band that is featured in Nelson’s book.

Together, they discuss how decolonial metal is defined with place and plurality; how to get an in-depth understanding of it as fans, journalists and researchers; the combined efforts of academia and journalism to highlight decolonial metal; and its transformative potential for metal music and culture at large.
